When I tried to move the knob that controls temperature, it felt really stiff. Unfortunately, I applied a little pressure and heard a loud pop. The good news was the knob was no longer stiff, the bad news, there is no temperature control. I took it to my local repair shop, and they want $500 just to get to it and try to figure out what is wrong. I love my Miata, but it is getting really cold here in the mountains without any heat. Can you help?

The a/c / heater control panel (the knobs you use) will need to be replaced. i suggest searching for a used control panel at local salvage yards and even online sites such as ebay.com . i will post the replacement steps below to help you along with the repair instead of having a shop do it ..
