The a/c fan works on position 1-3 but when you put it in position 4 it knocks the a/c out. What is wrong and how do you suggest it be corrected?

Here was my original question; Cooling Fan Problem
6 (6cyl) 3.0 ltr w 65,000 miles
the fan on my car runs well after the car is shut down and has never done this before. I was told the ect sensor may be bad. Is that it or could itbe something else. Also where here is it located on the engine? And how do I change it?

The ECT is threaded into the engine block. It unthreads by turning counter-clockwise. Remove the electrical connector and unthread the sensor. Where the sensor is depends on what engine you have.
