Engine light on. I had the auto part store put it on a machine to find out the problem. I bought parts but cannot find the knock sensor.

Good morning.

Codes do not identify failed parts just failed systems. Parts stores employ parts salesman not technicians. Once the code is read, diagnostics need to be done to determine the failure. It is best to start with the code first and follow a flow chart to determine the actual failure instead of throwing parts at it that may not fix it.

Do you remember the actual code number?

The knock sensor is attached to the cylinder block. It senses engine knocking using a piezoelectric element. A knocking vibration from the cylinder block is sensed as vibrational pressure. This pressure is converted into a voltage signal and sent to the ECM.

Freeze frame data will not be stored in the ECM for the knock sensor. The MIL will not light for knock sensor malfunction. The knock sensor has one trip detection logic.

Use an ohmmeter which can measure more than 10 M ohm.
1. Disconnect knock sensor harness connector.
2. Check resistance between terminal 1 and ground.

Resistance: 500 - 620 kohm [at 20 °C (68 °F)]

Caution: Discard any knock sensors that have been dropped or physically damaged. Use only new ones.
