The engine light staying on is an electrical problem the way to figure that out is the vehicle will need to be scanned to see what the electrical problem is. THe oil burning could be valve guide seals or bad piston rings. Does blueish smoke come out of the tail pipes?

Thank you for your answer. There is no blue smoke coming out of exhust. The car is running great it is just the oil issue, I have to go a trip from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA and want to make sure I will get me back. In October m husband and I did an oil change, then end of November had to put 3 litres of oil in, December 2litres, January 2 litres. Have not been driving since. Do you think it would be fine to take on trip. This is a great site for someone to ask questions since my husband is not mechanically incline.

Even though you have no smoke coming out of the tali pipes the oil is biruning whick mean bad valve guide seals or bad piston rings, the only way to fix either problem is, to have valve guide seals fixed the heads will have to be taken off motor and machined and to fix piston rings the motor will have to be torn all the way down and the pistons took out and the rings replaced. In my opnion I would not take the vehicle on a trip until this problem was fixed. Also thank you for using this website we try our best ;)

With regards to the smoke, you can safely go on your trip, with regards to your check engine. Be careful.

Here's a few tips that might help: Clean your MAF sensor, take it off and clean all the electrical components with an engine degreaser.
2nd: change spark plugs and spark plug cables (changing cables prevented me from throwing my car to the wreckers. It was making a laud knocking noise, and it stopped after that)

These are the cheapest and most effective measures.

Also. The most common problem for check engine light is the oxygen sensors. You might need one or 2 depending if you have 1 or 2 exhausts. U can pick them off ebay for like 20 bucks a piece.

Let me know how it goes.
