I have a 1990 Town car w/ 5.0L, auto transmission. The car runs, idles, and starts just fine 90% of the time. There are just random times when I am coming to a stop the car will die. The radio and dash instruments will stay on and the engine will just shut off like I ran out of gas. I put it in neutral, and the car starts up just fine. Sometimes it'll die the next few times I stop and sometimes nothing happens for the rest of the day. I thought it was the fuel filter and/or build up on the injectors so I replaced the filiter and put injector cleaner in the tank. It seems to have helped it die less frequent but it still does it randomly. That could just be coincidence though. I thought about replacing the fuel pump but before I go through that, does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be?

I have a 2000 Town Car, after approx 75,000 miles, my engine started to stop running randomly. It happens while I'm actually driving, about 40 MPH. As with your engine, the electrical system stays on, engine just stops.
My "Ck Trac" light comes on. I put it in park, and it starts right up. Took it to a Lincoln dealer, they changed the fuel pump. Did not fix problem. Had all the tires checked, OK. Took it to a mechanic with a pretty good reputation. Had full engine service done, oil, filters, etc. He kept it for about 3 weeks, driving it with my permission. Checked the computer for codes right after each incident. No luck. Finally, after getting nowhere, he changed a sensor in the computer, no guaranties, and disabled the Trac light. After about 9 miles, same problem. The "Ck Trac" light came on, even though it is disabled. I kept track of the miles between incidents, appox 9-20 miles. I started to accelerate the gas pedal when i first start up the engine. I have driven the car about 80 miles now without it dying. Did I find a remedy? Don't know, still won't go to far from home. GOOD LUCK!
