Starter motor will not engage, most of the time. All I get is a "click", which apparently draws down the battery. After a few or many attempts to start the car, it used to catch and start the engine. Butf gradually, this condition worsened, and the car now sits in my driveway.

I understand the starter motor replacement takes several hours, as the unit is under or within the motor.

Has this been subject of a recall? It should be, as this is a "luxury" car, and should not be so easily vulnerable.

Also: the two "struts" which hold the hood upright no longer do that job. Has this ever been recalled? Seems to me that this is a failure also.

Neither of these two parts are subject to recall. They are common parts which eventually fail over time due to wear and tear. Whether it is a luxury car or just a small pickup, the starter is going to fail sooner or later as it undergoes a tremendous amount of wear and tear each time you start the vehicle.

The struts can be re gassed this is a lot cheaper than new, as for the started it sounds as if it is in need of an overhaul, being that its ten years old, that's not a bad life span if its never been touched before.
