Adjusting handbrake cable

PARKING BRAKE
NOTE:Ensure parking brake shoes are correctly adjusted before adjusting parking brake cable. Parking brake cable adjustment is used to compensate for a stretched cable or a replacement cable.

Raise and support vehicle. Ensure parking brake is released. Rotate adjuster on rear of backing plate (6 o'clock position) clockwise to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Parking brake shoes should be fully expanded against drum. See PARKING BRAKE SHOES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
Rotate adjuster counterclockwise 1-1.5 turns. Ensure parking brake drum rotates freely. Pull up on parking brake handle. Rear wheels should lock on third notch of ratchet with a pull of about 30 lbs. (14 kg). If necessary, adjust parking brake outer cable using adjusting nuts located near parking brake lever. Operate parking brake several times to seat shoes.
