I have a 2001 Jeep TJ w/ 4.0 6 cyl. k&N airfilter, 4Inch lift and running on 33s. I take it occasionally off road and occaisionally throught some watery mud.
First issue, I have had the Jeep as a 3rd owner for 2 years now and every since I bought the jeep it has always needed a first start attempt then before I try the second attempt I hear some motorized item sound then the Jeep starts right up. If warm the jeep always starts on the first go. What could it be?
Starter? engine turns over immediately when I turn key on first attempt.
Fuel Pump? Buil;t into the damn fuel tank along with the filter.
Second issue, about a few months ago the jeep started stuttering on acceleration. when cold in the am, when driving especially arount 2200 RPM and even when I am going at high speeds. No actual back fires have been heard just seems to loose power then keep going in an instant and may do it several times at once.
I've tried using fuel injector cleaner and lubricants, Changed the oil and filter, cleaned and re-oiled the K&N air filter, changed the spark plugs(needed to, the normal fouling had the gap around .050-.060 on probably the original plugs) still no help. Cleaned the throttlebody, it was pretty sutty. still no change.
I'm at a loss. I have pretty good shade-tree knowledge and can't help think that the motorized sound I am hearing is the fuel pump initiating the prime late and the filter/pump needs to be changed. I think I'm about to Drop my first jeep tank and replace the filter/pump mechanism. Got any other ideas before I waste a day and approx $200?
