I just recently started having severe prblems with my catalytic converter. The service engine light has been blinking and the Jeeps manual says this indicates a fault with the converter. On average I have been quoted $650.00 for a mechanic to replace the converter and about $320 to buy a converter and install it myself. I don't have the tools or experience to install it myself so I was wondering if there was any way to fix or clean the existing converter?

There is no way to clean the Cat you have to replace it. Before you do anything I would suggest taking it to your local auto zone and have them pull codes. Just because the manual says the Cat is at fault doesn't neccessarily mean it is. The only way to be sure is to have codes pulled.
