Hi, I purchased a 2006 Jeep Liberty renegade, car is in overall great shape, I didnt think to look at the underparts which when I did notice walking torwards the rear are extremely rusted, the frame, muffler, etc. The dealer says I have no worries, that this is only surface rust and it will never eat through or damage anything. I am worried, I paid so much money (overpaid I think) can you give me an expert opinion on rust for a 2006 vehicle? Is there any cause for concern?
Thank you!

Hi there,

This is sounding like salt water corrosion, as you often see this (rear end rust only) from cars that often back boats into sea water and are never washed down, if this is the case this can be a serious problem, I would get a panel shop or a mechanic to do an inspection and report the extent of this rust, as you may have rusty brake & fuel lines and the general rust will not stop if it is deep seated.

Thanks for your quick response. According to carfax the previous owner lived in Vermont, Dealer claims the salt and snow elements caused the rust, they basically guaranteed me there is no danger and it is only cosmetic. However Im still worried, a mechanic recommended I have the rust scraped off and have the underparts undercoated, Im trying to get the dealer to do this but they are reluctant. Dealer claims surface rust will never eat through the steel underparts, told me Id be pushing up daisies before that happens. So thats why Im getting other opinions so I have some ammunition when I go back to them.
