Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Problem

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles
i have a 99 grand cherokee with a 4.0 4x4 and the transmission messed up in it. When you put it in gear it starts making a whining noise all the gears still work until the transmission gets hot then it starts slipping and then it will stop pulling after a few more minutes. one of my buddies said that the transmission pump wasnt working. does that sound right? can just the pump be changed or do i need a whole new transmission.
