I'm trying to figure out where a noise is coming from. I have a 1978 Jeep CJ7 with the 304 V8. I have been getting a moaning coming from the engine. My first thought was that it was the power steering pump. So I drained the old fluid out and replaced it with Lucas pwr steering fluid. If it was the pump it should of silenced it at least a little bit. My next thought is that its the water pump. The moaning seems to be coming from that direction. It's not a squeeling like with a loose belt. It sounds more like there may be something wrong with the bearings. Does anyone have any ideas?

The noise could be anything the belt drives. Put a tablespoon of vasoline in the power steering pump and see if it makes difference. Some "moans" in that vintage can be traced to the power steering gear sector.

If it was the bearings it would most likely happen in 4wd but its still possibly in 2wd, so put it in 4wd and see if its louder and if its is than thats most likely what it is so take your differential cover off and pull out the differential and check those bearings and the pinion bearings for wear
