1998 Jeep Cherokee Water pump went out.

Why in the world if I had my water pump go out would my engine run really ruff during idle and even stall on me? I checked the oil and there was no milky mixture in there. Engine did get hot but I shut it off before it got too hot. It died on me twice and didnt want to start again. Im not completely stupid when it comes to cars, I know quite a few things, but I just cant figure out why it would be running ruff and stall on me. Please help.

Has the check engine light come on? Also, have you checked compression to make sure you didn't blow a head gasket?
