1998 Jeep Cherokee smells bad when AC is turned on

The car smells like something died in the ac ventilation system when I turn my air on. How can I check to see and be sure or is there a filter in the system that needs to be changed.

What you may be smelling is possibly mold and/or mildew that grows on the evaporator core. Try spraying Listerine (The old sugar free yellow stuff) into the air intakes to freshen the breath of your A/C.
