After the car warms up, the temp gauge fluctuates from the middle up to near the red line and back. I think it's either the thermostat of the temp sending unit but I need a way to be sure. I have an infared thermometer that I can use. The radiator has been flushed last year and the coolant level is good.

What I would do is replace the thermastat. When you flushed the rad did you change the thermastat. If you use the infrared thermometer use one focus point near the thermastat on the engine side. That way the you will see if the temp fluciates up and down. Check out our how does it work and click on thermastat.
