The dash heat gage quickly goes to a high heat reading. If I open the hood - the engine does not seem overly hot. The electric cooling fan does not engage - so either the fan is not working, or it does not sense it is hot enough to kick in. Could this be a relay or temp sending unit, or?

Do you have a digital or analog dash? Also, does the the temp indicator jump imediately or gradually? Please advise.

It is analog. The gage goes up fairly slowly - then very fast and sometimes rather jumpy.

I have to believe it's a problem with the temp sending unit. If you unplug the single wire connector to the sender, the gauge should go to "0". If yes, change the unit.
