I need to replace the rear main seal due to oil leak, on 1996 jaguar xj6. My question is, do I have to take the transmission completly out of the car to fix it, or can I just unbolt everything and just slide it back far enough to replace it?At same time I plan on replacing the front seal on the transmission just for preventative mantinence while im in there.

Check with your parts house, on some engines you can replace rear seal without pulling everything.

Yes, you have to pull the tranny and the flywheel to replace the rear main. It sits in a retainer that unbolts from the block. Good idea to change the tranny seal, too. I like a person who thinks ahead. Saves a lot of time and money.
