I have a 6 cyl Jaguar Sovereign
and the transmission icon lights on the panel and the message "Failed" appears. That is all that happens. Any ideas? Is there a way to by pass the a sensor to get it to start.

i'm just kidding...describe ur symptom more thoroughly in detail..do u mean -->
1.) engine won't spin?
2.) engine spin but won't turn over(ignition & combustion)?

i ran into this 1 time and i think i fixed it over the phone ...of cuz 90% of the time people don't bother to call back if it work cuz they are to busy about their other priorities...i think u might have the shifter stuck at drive or in gear which the safety neutral switch can't engage ..try move ur shifter to neutral and start it...i don't work on a lot of european ..so msg me back with answer and i don't have to crawl all over alldata b4 we realize it is a simple problem...heeee hawwww

It is a 1991 Jag XJ6 4.0 Saloon Sovereign 6 cyl. 3980cc.
It turns the starter but doesn't start. When the vehicle condition management(VCM) button is pushed it prints "failed" but no error code is given. Since the Automatic Transmission warning light is indicating an error, I am wondering if the Eletronic Control Unit (EDU) for the transmission is faulty or needs to be reset? And is stopping the engine from operating?
Thank you for your help so far. -xj6fix

I found time to tinker with it all day today and got it running.
The transmission was down a quart on fliud, the battery was a bit weak, the distributor points and rotor were grungy. And it was hungry for cat food (fuel on empty). I don't know why thought it had to be something exotic like the ECU modules.
It still has brake light on and makes a sound like one of the brake shoes is dragging. Also the electronic door locks are still fouled up. But thanks for your encouragement.
