My check engine light just came on (book says that it will go into limp mode, but I do not notice any change) I was just going to the store when this happened. What could it be and what can I do. I am able to do some work on this car. The oil was changed at my Lincoln dealer approx. 300mi. Ago.

Check engine lamps can illuminate for many reasons. You will need to use a diagnostic scanner (or have a repair shop do it for you) to retrieve the trouble code(s) that the vehicle's computer has stored. This will pinpoint the cause of the check engine lamp being illuminated.

Many auto parts stores, such as AutoZone, will read the codes from your car for free.

If your car is not in restricted performance, the fault is probably in the emissions system or a transient CAN bus error. Typical problems are loose gas cap and the lamda sensors.

If it's a transient error, you'll see the light go off after 3 successful warm up from cold events. I.E, After the car is cold, you start and drive the car to fully warm. You'll see the light go off when it gets warm on the fourth trip.
