I recently replaced both my fuel pump and the relay on my XJ6. It still will not start right away, even after being shut off for just a minute. It starts with starting fluid after a few tries. It will usually start after I turn the key on but not turning it over 3 or 4 times then turning it over. I can hear the fuel pump run each time. What else could be wrong? It never cuts out when I'm driving or idling and runs well.

Try pulling a plug wire and doing a spark test. See if you get spark immediately when the motor starts to crank or if it cranks a few turns before you get spark. I would be a little suspicious of the ignition amplifier. Is your spark long and blue, or short and yellow.
