My 1987 Jaguar xj6 shut down while driving. I checked and was not getting any gas. I replace the fuel pump, which had a very faint hum when running. After replaceing the pump the car will not start, I check for voltage at the pump and did'nt have any voltage. I check for voltage at the relay had voltage at one of the 5 pins but no output voltage to the pump. I replace the relay and still no voltage to the pump. I checked the wire from the fuel pump to the relay and found no shorts. These test were done while cranking and ignition on. I went as far as to disconect the (-) negitave cable from the battery and clip a test light to the terminal and the probe to the (-) post of the battery to check for shorts, and found no shorts. Whats up.

You should be able to hear the pump run for 2 or 3 seconds when you turn the key to "on", not to start. If "no" check the ignition "on" relay. If "yes", but no pump on cranking, check to see if you have spark on cranking. If no spark or fuel on cranking, replace the crankshaft position sensor.

The fuel pump does'nt come on when the key is in the on position, or while cranking. The fuel pump is new and so is the fuel pump and main relays. If I put power directly to the fuel pump is does make a loud hum.

Check to see if you have spark at the plugs. When you turn the key to "on" you should hear the fuel pump run for just a couple seconds. Is this so?

I have an '88 XJ6, but the break year for wiring was '88/'87. Do you have, or have access to, a fax #. I'll ship you some diagrams that will make it easier for you. The fuel pump relay gets its signal to close from the ECM. If you didn't have spark as well as fuel I would say the crankshaft position sensor was out, but, you have spark so it rules that out. Please advise and I could get the diagrams out yet tonight, Jim

Hi there Princeofdarkniss, Thanks for the info. I did check the Interia Switch several times by pushing it up and down, fleaving it in the up position. Would you know how I can go about bypassing it? By the way I love meeting other Jaguar owners.

The enertia switch should be pushed "down" to be reset. Don't forget about the CPS.

Hi james, What is the CPS? Also I'll make sure the interia switch in in the down position. I'll let you know how things go, when I get the next break from work.

CPS is on the front right side of the engine by the crankshaft pulley. The mounting bracket is held to the engine by two 6MM bolts. It is easier to pull the sensor bracket and all, then change the sensor. Make sure the bracket and mounting space on the engine are nice and clean before you reinstall.

Hi James, it's been a while but I still have the no start problem with my 1987 Jag. I went a head and replace the interia switch and the ignition relay under the dash, by the fuse box. I could'nt find the crankshaft position sensor, are you sure the car has one? By the way if I spray either into the throttle body the car starts right up and dies when the either burns off. What I'm looking for is what ever turns the fuel pump and the injectors on? Thats where my problem lies. Can you send any electrical diagrahms for the fuel and ignition systems? Also if I put power directly to the fuel pump it comes on and I install a noide light attach to one of the injectors and crank the motor I don't get any pulse from the injector. If this helps any. Thanks in advance for all your help in ths matter.

Do you have, or have access to, a fax #? I can download the diagrams, but they are so compressed they are hard to read. If you can get me a fax # I'll ship some diagrams to you. Please advise. Also, '88 was the first year they used a CP sensor, I thought it was '87. I stand corrected.

Hi there Jim, latest update. I looked over the wiring diagrahm you faxed me via my wife. I spent the entire weekend checking for shorts and bad grounds from the computer to the injectors, to the injector resister and just about all wires from the front of the car all back to the computer. No luck as yet, fuel pump still not getting power and the injectors still not firing. I know the answer is near at hand, I just can't put my finger on it. I appreciate your time and information, Thank you so very much.
