Hello,
Two nights ago, I purchased my car that "seemed" to run perfect and blow cold air. Yesterday morning the a/c wasn't blowing cold air and then the car broke down. It was determined by a mechanic that it needed both a new battery and an alternator which were replaced. The a/c still doesn't blow cold air. What are the likely causes? I am a female who honestly knows little about cars so I don't want to get ripped off when going into a repair shop. Having an idea or two of what could be happening may help. Thanks a bunch!

Hi there,

The system may be low on refrigerant, what some people do is they top up the A/C so the system works for a few days if they are wanting to sell the car, and as the refrigerant leaks out the system shuts down, I would have it leak tested first, what they will do is put a small charge of refrigerant back into the system with a leak detector dye, and as it leaks out the dye will stain and the leak is very visible, start here.

I wholeheartedly agree with the answer above. Some shops use an electronic "sniffer" to detect leaks. This works quite well also. The most common leak is the seal in the front of the compressor. They can be replaced, but you will be money ahead having the compressor replaced if this be the case. If your compressor is leaking oil from behind the pulley, it's leaking freon too.
