Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Jaguar Vanden Plas Two Wheel Drive Automatic 84,000 miles

After overheating my '98 Vanden Plas- has 84,000 miles the engine started running very rough and growly. The mechanic believes that one of the secondary timing chains is very loose, the tensioner is no longer working, the plastic rails may be broken and it probably jumped a tooth on the gear. To replace all 4 chains and replace the covers etc he's charging $4900 for parts and labor. Is this somewhere close to the ball park for this kind of work or should I get a second opinion?

Hi there,

The times guide allows around 10 Hrs to replace the 4 chains, each chain is around $70. I did not find a price for tensions and rails, but regardless the quote of around 5K is some what steep, I would be getting a second quote first.
