Engine Mechanical problem
1989 Isuzu Trooper 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have an Isuzu Trooper 1989 2.6 fuel injection petrol.

Replaced the head, cam belts and tensioner. Set it all up to TDC but find that the number one piston is on the exhaust stroke, number 4 is on the firing stroke (rockers rocking) I am about to insert the distributor and set it up I have two books one tells me that I set it all up for number 1 piston (as I have done for timing) the other (online) tells me to set it up on number 4 piston ie. Put it in when 4 is rocking.I am lost hope you can help

Usually when reassembling, the engine is timed to #1. But if the cams show that 1 is on the exhaust stroke it sounds like it is timed to 4. Can you turn the engine over by hand without any interference? If so, turn until 1 is on comp stroke TDC and drop the distributor in then. As long as the cam/crank timing is good, you will be ok or 180 out (opposite of where it should be)
