Sometimes when I turn the key on my '99 Isuzu Rodeo, all I get is a click. Other times it whips right over. The battery has recently been replaced, I cleaned up the terminal ends and made sure that they are on tight. Does this mean my starter solenoid is bad, or could it be a bad relay somewhere. Is this something that a mechanic should look at ? Is the starter solenoid easily fixed or replaced? Thankyou.

If all you get is just a single click, it has to do with the ignition circuit to the starter. It can be either the starter relay, starter solenoid, or the starter itself. In your case, I would start with the easiest and the least expensive, which is the starter relay. It is inside the fuse/relay box under the hood

Then you need to check the starter solenoid (attached to the starter)

***Chances are it is your starter.***

Possible that the starter motor geers are worn and not engaging properly. Sometimes mine would start on first click but usually starts on the 4th to 20th click. Replaced the starter moter which had a new gear and no problems since.
