1997 Infiniti I30 144000 miles

Hi, I bought an Infiniti I-30 About 10 days back and it has the service engine soon light on, I took it to a smog test only center to get the smog test done and on the functional check results, it says malfunction indicator light = fail, and the fault codes = U ( perhaps Unknown), I dunno how to and what do from here but unless i get this done I wouldnt be able to drive and theres not much money that I got to afford for this. Can you please tell me whats the best thing to do. thanks

Codes should start with P. Take your car to the local autozone or parts store, call ahead to see if they have an ODB II scanner. Scan your car, and it will tell you what is wrong.

We do not have emissions where I am, but if you failed, I would assume the code may be P1402 which is your EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. I think the valve is around 120 dollars? Not too hard to put in, just a lot of stuff in your way to get to it. Hope this helps.
