1999 Hyundai Sonata Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Automatic 60000 miles

I WAS DRIVING LONG DISTANCE AND THE CAR ENGINE STOPPED COMPLETELY. NO PWER. WAITED FOR A WHILE AND THEN STARTED AGAIN. WILL STOP AT TRAFFIC SIGNAL COPLETELY. IT DID THREE TIMES ON THE WAY TO DESTINATION AND NOW IT WILL NOT START AND HAD TO TOWED AWAY. THE DEALER SAYS IT IS SENSOR. CAN YOU EXPLAIN BEFORE I ASK FOR REPAIR.

HI there,

It is not uncommon for the crank shaft position sensor to fail, this is the primary source of infomation re the position of the pistons, etc so the ECU can fire the spark plugs, inject the fuel and so on, without this reference nothing will work and the engine will shut down. The mechanic can check the computer memory for a fault code that will be related to this or any other fault in the engine management system.
