NEED TO KNOW WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE CAR TO SHUT OFF WHEN IDLE BUT AS LONG AS I HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS IT WILL STAY RUNNING

It sounds like a bad throttle position sensor. Has the check engine light come on?

no the check eng. light has not come on

If the light isn't on, chances are there is a vacuum leak or it may be in need of a tune up. Check for leaks first. Let me know when the last tune up was.
