We have kept impecable maintenance on our Santa Fe. It has 78k miles. Last week it died. I am told by the dealer that the fan belt broke, took out the timing belt, bent the valves. All this after having the injectors cleaned, carbon removed, etc. Does this make sense? they want $3k ++ to repair. Should we just junk it or find a way to repair? I'm lost as to what to do.

Hi mgasper,

At 78,000 miles if the timing belts had not been replaced before, it could have snapped without anything hitting it.

However did they check and confirm that the valves were bent? Most engines are designed not to hurt the valves when the belt snaps, but it still can depending on the condition when it happened.
