Vibrates at 38-40 mph only. Ceases upon acceleration or manual downshift. Seems to happen only in 4th gear, normal shift mode, slight uphill grade. Not noticed when accelerating quickly, like highway on ramp. Problem still there after trans. Service. Tires fairly new. No steering wheel vibration.

I recommend rotating tires, front to back, or even balancing them, and see if there is any change. Although tires may be good, balance can be an issue. You have done a very good job listing specific symptoms, and some are not an exact match for a tire balance issue, but it's important to remove tires as a possible source.
