Weird Response

I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra with about 87,000 miles on it. It has a 2.0L engine. Occassionally when I push on the gas pedal, nothing happens for a few seconds, and then the gas will kick in and keep going. It has been doing it more and more and I am starting to get a bit worried. Do you know what the problem could be?

What do you mean keep going. The car will accelerate on its own? Check the accelerator cable and the cam that it is attached to at the throttle body. Make sure it is free to move without any hangups. Sounds like it is sticking some where.

The car won't accelerate on its own, it won't accelerate right away when I press on the gas pedal. It is a delayed response before the gas kicks in. It almost acts like its stalled, and then the gas kicks in.
