I replaced my old serpentine belt ( v ribbed type ) with a new one. however the belt kept slipping ( I guess ) and the pulleys misaligned each time I turned the crankshaft. I finally tightened the belt to the very end of the tensioner ( maximum tension ). But even then the pulleys misalign. By the way I marked all the pulley locations with a pencil before I took out the old belt. I reinstalled the old belt but it too caused the same problem. The problem was not there before I took out the old belt for the first time. Should I apply any chemical to the belt or pulleys to stick more ?

Hi rad23,

Thank you for the donation.

I am not very clear what you meant by the pulley keep getting misaligned.

Do you mean the belt slips put when you turn the crankshaft?

The belt should be rather fitting and after the belt is seated all round before adjustment, try to pull the belt around the pulleys, letting it slip so that it can self seat correctly before you do the adjustment.

If the adjustment is at the maximum, there is a possibility the belt is not of the correct size.

On the other hand if the crank pulley is not turning in a straight line and seem to be wavy, the harmonic balancer is bad and the crank pulley has to be replaced.

A bad crank pulley would cause slipping noises when engine is started.

="KHLow2008"]Hi rad23, I have uploaded 2 drawing to explain better. I also applied belt spray on the belts and rotated the crankshaft. But still the marks misaligned. I started the engine anyway and it is working well ( the car is running ok for now). However why did the pulleys misalign ? has the pulleys automatically aligned to the correct position - is it that my old marks were wrong due to old belt slipping from the correct position ? by the way the car was running well before I took off the old belt and currently running well for now. It never had squeaks before or after the replacement.

The pulleys are of different size so they would not match when the crank pulley is turned. That is normal.
