Electrical problem
2002 Hyundai Elantra

Hi, I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that most often than not requires more than one try to start. Sometimes up to 10 but has always started.

I had a mechanic over and he said that it was the starter until he plugged in the battery tester or voltometer and said that it was most likely the alternator causing this problem since it was at a low 12v. The battery is a few months old.

My question is that if it's the alternator wouldn't have my battery died on me yet or that car show signs of a weak battery? My car always ends up starting..would it do that if the alternator was shot?

People are telling me I should change my starter but I have no idea what to do. Also, if the alternator is on the way out wouldn't I have to change it eventually too?

I'm low on cash so I'm really needing advice because I can't afford to get the starter changed for nothing.

thanks for reading and giving me input.

If the engine is cranking over and refusing to start-the starter is doing its job its a different story if it doesn't crank at all/nothing

If there's a problem with the Alty the battery is gonna have a hard time cranking the engine over being dead.

Do below to determine if its a fuel or spark problem

Disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor /distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, ECM,Ignitor cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
