When I drive the rpm goes to 3 and it shifts into 2nd smoothly ---- about 1 /2 hour later as im driving all of the sudden the rpm races up tp 5 rpm then it shifts and clunks at the same time into 2nd. The check engine light goes on then as I drive it shifts normally. As soon as I shut off the car wait few minutes then restart the check engine light is completely off unti; 1/2 hour later does the whole thing again. Is it the sensor that controls the trasmission or what gives

Here is what you need to do. Keep another key to the car handy in your purse. The next time the check engine light come on, drive to an Autozone. Park the car with the engine running and lock all doors. That is why you have the extra key handy (to open the door later). Or if you have a passenger, that works too.

Ask the Autozone attendant to scan the computer. Yes, they can scan computer with the engine running. Post the code numbers, description optional.
