How many amps should the alternator be putting out to properly charge the battery?

It depends on the load ,Minimum output amperage is 56 amps

If you measure the voltage at the battery while engine is idling it should read 13.5 to 15.5 volts. If you read below or over these voltages the alternator is not doing its job
