My hyundai accent won't start from time to time, the lights go on and the radio works, there is no noise when I turn the key. I have taken it to a mechanic and he put it on the diagnostic and he could not find the problem. 2 weeks later it did it again and again he put it on the diagnostic and he kept the car for 4 days, still he said he didn't find anything. It starts when it wants to. I can't afford to keep taking it to the shop, my hours are being cut at work and $ is tight. I need a general idea of what it could be.

WHen this happens, I need you to get a helper to hold the key in the start position while you check to see if there is 12volts going to the smaller wire on the starter. If there is, the starter is the problem. If not, it could be a starter relay or a bad ignition switch.

Let me know what you find.

It might be the starter engine. Try turning on the headlights and see if the lights dim after a few seconds. If they do it might be a defective battery, otherwise operate the ignition switch and see if the lights dim. If they dim it indicates that the current reaches the starter engine and that the problem is located in the starter.

Can you hear any sounds from the engine room? Clicking or spinning sounds?
