Transmission problem
1997 Honda Prelude 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive 108000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi

I was wondering if you knew what the problem is with my car- when I start it its fine, in reverse its great but then when I try to drive it kind of stalls, the revs go up to 5000rpm. It feels like its not changing gears automatically and runs a bit then kicks in, chugs and speeds off even when I only press the accelerator a little bit. Then at 30km/hr, it tries to change gears and does the whole process again.

I tried to drive it in manual and it doesn't do this- only in auto. Can it be a computer problem with the transmission or does it only need transmission oil?

Thanks

Hi keti,

No, not the fluid. It should be something electrical.

I would sugggest checking the Thrrottle Position Sensor first.

Do you have any check engine lights? If you do, scan first. Then check the throttle cables areas, make sure there isnt any thing in the way, open the intake hose and check the throttle body for any black carbon build around the throttle plates, clean it if you can. Make sure the fluids is full at flat ground and engine off. Transmission fluids requires the special Honda Transmission fluid, or synthetic, instead of the typical Dexron 3/mercon mix fluid. My final thoughts base on your descriptions will be a bad transmission shift solenoids. But scan the computer for any Transmission codes not just engine. Good luck
