I have a 1998 Honda Passport. For a couple of months, I had a check engine light that would come on, and then it would go off on it's own. Now it stays on. I seems I'm getting noticeable worse fuel economy now and the acceleration of the vehicle is not what it used to be. Sometimes when climbing a hill, I give it more gas and the RPM rises, but I don't seem to get any additional acceleration out of it. Theres no smoke coming out of the exhaust but the inside of my tailpipe is all sooty and there is about an inch ring of soot on the end of the tailpipe. Could this be a sensor problem? Catalytic Converter? I don't think it's the CAT because there isn't an odor. Any help you can provide would be great.

well, i take it you would like to save your money and time on this one, so i woudl like you to take it to a autozone or auto place and have them scan it for trouble codes. it should tell you whats wrong with it.

All the things you listed could cause that problem.
