I HAVE A 1986 CRX AND ON THE WAY HOME THE OTHER DAY, IT SPIT AND SPUTTERED AND STALLED OUT. WHEN I WENT TO TRY AND START IT ALL I GOT WAS A HIGH, FAST NOISE AND IT WON'T START. SOMEONE WHO HEARD IT SAID IT WAS THE TIMING BELT. WHEN MY HUSBAND LOOKED AT IT HE SAID THE BELT WAS NOT BROKE. COULD THE BELT HAVE JUST WORN OUT AND SLIPPED? WE ARE THINKING THAT IF WE GETA NEW TIMING BELT AND RETIME IT THAT IT WILL FIX IT. IS THIS HIGH HOPES OR WHAT?

Hi ladylace62,

Symptoms do indicate a bad timing belt.

Quite often the belt would not break but the teeth would be stripped.

Keep your fingers crossed, it is possible the valves are not damaged. Check the valve clearance and if any are excessive, then the valve could be bent due to the timing belt giving way.

The timing belt is okay and not broken but it has jumped time. How do you put it back in time?

Here are diagrams for aligning the timing belt.

Ensure the timing belt i not stripped of tooth at lower crankshaft sprocket.
