Began overheating. lots of smoke in exhaust. Smells like anti-freeze. Also very sluggish now when i accelerate. I've changed the thermostate and now believe it is some kind of blockage in the cooling system. Am I on the right track. Also, we no longer have heat coming out of my dash. I'm praying there is an affordable way to deal with this problem. I dont think my car would make it to the mechanics from here.

first make sure the thermostat is facing the proper way. next make sure that you bleed the cooling system or air after you put back together the radiator hose.

but the smoke and smell of antifreeze in the exhaust shows a sign of a blown headgasket or a warped head. chances are you will have to do it yourself or take it to a mechanics. to verify that it is the headgasket perform a compression test the lowest one should be no less then 75% of the highest one.
