I have a 1997 standard Honda Civic with 120K miles. The A/C belt was screeching and the compressor would not run all the time so I replaced the belt. Now it works great when I am at speeds of greater the ~25mph, but when I come to a stop it blows hot air and it feels like the engine isn't loaded down by the compressor. A friend at work said it may be due to lack of pressure in the system and that I just need a recharge. Does this sound right? Any other ideas? Thanks.

I think your friend is right it is probably just low on freon. Another thing that it might be but unlikly is that the engine fan is not coming on when the a/c system tells it to. That would be why it works when moving because the air blowing over the a/c condensor when driving. Just open your hood when the engine is just started so engine is cool and engine fan won't be coming on because engine is hot. Then turn on the a/c, look to see if the fan is being turned on. It may run all the time with a/c on or it may cycle on and off. It just depends on design.

Hope this helps

The refrigerant - The vehicle you are driving uses the new 134a coolant and at Walmart and other stores you can buy a kit to recharge the car. It comes with guage, coolant, etc. Not that expensive. Easy to do. You ONLY hook it up to the LOW side. Light blue cap with an L on it.
