Hello. Mileage is 83.3k, 4-cyl v-tech, 5-sp stick. No repair history, first real problem. Two weeks ago I was getting 42 mpg, now I'm driving a bucking bronco that's sucking gas. I have been diagnosed with a bad oxygen sensor. I'm sceptical. Had the plugs, cap and rotor replaced and nothing has changed. Quoted $650 for repair of oxygen sensor, seems high.

Are there any other options? Is the vehicle going to die on me on the road? Can I repair this myself? Would an air filter change help for the short term?

When we had a lot of rain last week things improved and the engine light turned off.

Thank you all for your help.

Does seem a bit high, check around and see if you can get a better price. the oxygen sensor is in the exhaust pipe near the center of vehicle, below seating area.

The OEM Primary O2 sensor retails for ~ $600. That is only the part. I have been there. Mine went out a couple of years ago.

So if the price includes labor. You have a pretty good deal.

I hoped by now that these primary O2 sensors would be less, but they have only increased.

I guess that is what we are supposed to do with all of the money we saved on gas....
