I have a 1998 Honda civic EX with 48,000 miles and an automatic transmission. When I turn on the AC or defroster, the car makes a high-pitched squealing noise and the car shutters. A friend said it could be a loose belt or something. Anyone have any idea what this could be, how it's fixed and how much it would cost?

yes i think it is a loose belt. costs about 20-40bucks for a new serpentine/drive belt. relativily easy to replace. directions are usually somewhere inside the engien compartment. for a belt diagram. toget belt off put a wrench on the tensioner pully and turn it counter clockwise and take belt off and remember or write down how it goes.
