2001 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
driving vehicle, check engine light comes on then stalls - restart vehicle and all seems fine - reach destination, several hours pass and am on return trip home - check engine light comes on and there is a large reduction in power - vehicle will not go over about 5 mph - open hood after getting to safe location - heat shield around oxygen sensor is glowing beet red - i suspect oxygen sensor needs to be replaced - what are the other possibilities?? Thanks

Hi tspeters1,

You need to extract the error code to know what is happening.

However the heating up of the exhaust manifold could be due to a non firing cylinder.

Check the spark plug and coil for fault. The loss of power should be associated.

I am not very mechanically inclined but thanks for the info - I posted the question thinking it may have been a simple fix ( $$ ) that I could have done myself - i.e. a quick trip to the parts store, a couple of turns on a wrench and BAM, Good as new - as this is not the case, I had it towed to the repair shop I normally use for more intricate issues - will let a professional look at it and determine the cause - thanks so much for your advice

FYI - had the car looked at by a professional - catalytic converter was bad - had it and several of the oxygen sensors replaced - ran great for a few weeks and then the rest of the oxygen sensors needed to be replaced -
