I have a 2000 Honda Civic EX with 74,000 miles on it (I-4 VTEC 127 hp engine). I notice that about every 45 days I have to add some oil because it is down about 1 qt. There are no oil leaks on the garage floor and I don't smell anything or see anything unusual in the exhaust. When I compare it to my wife's Camry the oil also tends to turn darker more quickly after an oil change. Is there anything I can do about this or is it just too difficult (and not dangerous enough to the engine) to track down? I have thought about the oil additives they have at Pep Boys, but I am not sure if they would do more harm then good.

I wouldn't use an additive. At the most, maybe step up to a little thicker oil if it bothers you. Otherwise check and add as needed. You can pull the spark plugs and see how they look. IT may show where the oil is going.

Ok, I will check the plugs and look for deposits. I am using 5W30, so I would switch to 10W30?

Thanks!
