Brakes problem
1998 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 140K miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
hi! my rear wheels were grinding when the car would go in reverse for the last few days, and then started doing it (intermittently) when the car was going forward; i have always had it serviced at the Honda dealer, yet recently found myself out of work!!! my neighbor suggested that it most likely is the rear brakes, yet NOT to take it to the dealer, since the cost will likely be "100%" higher there than at a regular japanese car repairs shop (i.e., Greg's. . .);
QUESTION: what should I expect to have to pay for rear brake problem such as this?
How complicated is the repair?
THANKS SO MUCH! patti

Hi patti-jo,

If the rear brakes are drum, most probably the slave cylinders are leaking causing the shoes to be contaminated and would have a coarse noise during initial driving. You might need to replace the shoes too.

If they are disc, the brake pads are worn and the indicator plate is brushing against the rotor.

Sorry I am unable to provide any costing but it would definitely be cheaper if not done by the dealer.
