Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I replaced my distributor and followed the Chilton's regarding resetting the PCM module but when I let it idle for the 5 minutes for the reset, the engine oscillates between 2000 and 1000 every second. I have completely unhooked the battery for more than 5 minutes and tried to reset the PCM again with the same results. Please help me understand why this is happening. Thanks

Hi kimg,

For Honda ECM normally you don't need any relearning procedures.

If the idling is hunting, you need to check for vacumn leakages. Is the CEL showing?

You have replaced the distributor, did you check the ignition timing?

Did you adjust the idling speed?

I found a vague reference to the IAC valve needed to be checked and cleaned. We did that and it seemed to work out the problem after driving a short distance. The car now seems to be running better than ever. Thanks for trying to help.
