1994 Honda Civic poor gas mileage

I have a KN filter on this car ..I did clean it off and still am only geting 280 miles on a tank of gas i used to get 375 I was told that i need to replace yhe ball joint..Will this cause lower mileage... or do I need new plugs and cap ect ...I replaced it all about 40.000 miles or so ago...THANKS
