I have a '93 honda civic that overheated(low coolant), after this occured the speedometer started jumping around and occasionally quit. Upon dropping to 0 mph the transmission torque convertor would disengage lock-up or come completely out of overdrive, I don't know which. If it is a burned up VSS then where is it located if not any ideas where I can start? I also have a '96 civic 5-speed that gets stuck at 20 mph and picks when it wants to come up to speed. Same problem? Thanks for your input.

Hi edwincisjr,

Thank you for the donation.

The speed sensor is located below the thermostat housing on the trans differential housing. Yes, your problem symptoms is similar to how a bad speed sensor behaves.

Regarding the 96 Civic, is the speedometer not working too? If yes you should get it repaired first. Apart from that, is the check engine light showing?

Yes, the check engine light is on. What's the significance and why fix the '96 first? Thanks for the reply.

Hi edwincisjr,

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Since CEL is showing, get a scan done first to see if it is related to the speed sensor.

What I meant was to get the speedometer of both cars repaired first and the trans problem might resolves itself.
