Smells problem
1993 Honda Civic Front Wheel Drive Manual 250000 miles

After car stalled, next had battery jumped to start again.....after driving around, going up a hill....RPMs were revving past 3 being in third gear.

I pulled over to the nearest garage because as I turned left, I smelled a strange, not pleasant scent coming from the car.

The scent didn't smell like an over shifting gear scent or a burnt tire from skidding scent.

What would it be?

Since this incident, I have only driven the car to move to parking spaces in residential areas.

The car starts fine and I'm able to shift into the gears I need to park.

I need to know what that odd scent was and if I need to replace any of these items:

-Timing Belt
-Clutch
-Battery
-Alternator

Please advise as soon as you can.

Thank you!

Hi Nanette Pico,

Most probably the clutch was slipping resulting in the high rpm required.

The smell should be from the overheating of the clutch disk due to the slippage.
